Little did Lewis Carroll know, back in the late eighteen hundreds, that the story he had written for a neighbor's child would become the classic that it is today. His story was both a satire and a piece of literary history that is as relevant now as it was then. Embrace your inner poet and dreamer at your next costumed event. Go as the heroine from Lewis Carroll's timeless tale in your Alice in wonderland costume.

The recent release of yet another movie retelling of the tale has brought new attention to the story. This time, the talented Tim Burton brought his interpretation to the story. Using the acting talents of luminaries such as Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, the story has been brought to life once more, with an interesting twist.

You can make your own costume for the role of Alice fairly simply. Start with a white knee-length skirt with lace trim. If you can not find such a skirt, try simply making a tube skirt with your sewing machine and stitching eyelet onto the hem.

Now you will need a blue dress, which has a pan style collar, short and which hems just above the line of lace on your white shift. Over top of your dress, you will need to wear a white apron. The apron has a bib style, and ties at the base of the neck and at the waist.

Some Alice costumes are super simple. Others are more elaborate. To add some details to your costume, you might consider wearing your hair tied back with a black bow. Of course, if your natural hair color is not blond, you may either color it or choose to get a long blond wig for the occasion.

If you are not up to the task of making your own costume, it is easy enough to find one already made. A number of are easily found online and in costume stores. Whether you want to go for the classic Alice or the sexy Alice look, you will be certain to find what you are looking for.

  2. QUESTION:
    Alice in wonderland costumes?
I want to maybe do a Alice in wonderland inspired photoshoot for my art project. If you'd give me some ideas for costumes I'd be grateful. I plan. To use two friends and split the characters between them so I'll leave a list below of some potential characters :) please and thankyou x

Alice obviously, , march hare, queen of hearts, the dutchess, I'd really love to do the caterpillar, and possibly the . Maybe the king of hearts?

    • ANSWER:
My ideas, personally, I'd have Alice in a short blue dress with a white apron with card symbols on it (you know, hearts, clubs, spades, and diamonds) with a top hat and small veil. I'd also give her blond hair in curls with diamonds (as in the card symbol) in her hair. I'd give her HUGE lashes, maybe with sparkles on her lids and light pink lips. I'd also give her white boots.
I'd put the king and queen of hearts together. I'd have the queen wear a body hugging dress that's black on the top and is cut to where the bottom half looks like a heart, but the back would flow out behind her. I'd give her black lips and nails and dark lids and give her red eyes lids and a small crown. I'd give the king a suit, one with short pants made of black and an elaborate jacket, I'm thinking black with red velvet inside and a shirt that's grey with read hearts and suck on it and a top hat/crown, maybe tilted.
As for the Hatter, I believe you should have him wear many top hats all on top of each other, slightly topsy-turvy (like, not all stacked on each other the normal way, some sideways or upside down.) in a suit, long pants that are torn and I figure bright colors with more of a "Joker" card likeness to him.
The Hare obviously has to have ears, I'm also thinking a top hat for him. I imagine a vest of some sort, maybe JUST a short vest with pants? I'm not sure, but definitely NO tail!
I believe since the caterpillar has always been represented as blue when in real life most are green, maybe you should use this fabric I've seen that's blue but when in seen in a different light, green (it's really shimmery, I love it.) as a long/short dress and a set of 'wings' made from the same material in a different color (red maybe?) that are attached to the dress and looped on the arms for a cool butterfly-wing-look. Also, give the actress a long cigarette (the kind in movies like Tiffany's) and blue lipstick with fluttery lashes and green eyelids.
The White Rabbit is an important element to the Alice in Wonderland story, I think he should come first in thick rimmed red glasses and white-lidded eyes and a pale pink lip stain. He (or she) should probably wear a short red vest and white anything else with some gold added for flare and a gold pocket watch.
I don't know who the duchess is, but I figure she'd wear a dress designed after the "Jack" card.

  5. QUESTION:
any other Alice-In-Wonderland costume suggestions besides alice, the madhatter, the hare, and the cat?
So there are 4 of us trick or treating this year, and we want to all go as alice-in-wonderland characters. One person is planning to be the madhatter, another the cat, and theres also a queen of hearts. I guess that means I should be alice, but I have black hair, dark skin, and I don't reaallly wanna be her. Just wouldnt fit the part quite right. I wanted to be the queen of hearts because the girl being her looks EXACTLY like someone who could be alice, but she already took it. So are there any suggestions, maybe other characters I could be? I've looked online but it seems like the 3 main costumes r the madhatter, alice, and the cat. Can we go without an alice? r there any costumes to do with alice-in-wonderland (NOT THE HARE) that I could find at a local halloween store? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

For tweedle dee and tweedle dum use overalls with stripped shirts and beanie caps. For the Queen and King dress them in red and make crowns.

  2. QUESTION:

I'm 14 and I REALLY want to be Alice for Halloween!<3

The only problem is, all the costumes I find are either for little kids, or they don't even look like Alice.
    :/
What are some costumes that actually look GOOD and traditional and original like the Disney Alice??

    Thanks! :)

    • ANSWER:

She has some Alice costumes up. I think there are three all together.

  3. QUESTION:
what do you think of kids wearing sexy costumes?
would you let your future kids wear sexy costumes? i go to a 12-13 year old school, and last year i saw 2 girls wearing the same alice in wonderland costume. one looked like a normal teenager on halloween(she looks like a 15 year old even though she is 13 and she is kinda tall), but the other girl looked like a 10 year old either trying to be all "cutesy", or it looked like she was DYING for rape. i am short at my school and she is the only shorter person in my classes.

    the costume they both wore:

i personally think a 16 or older girl should wear them

    • ANSWER:
They should not wear them. NEVER. Until they're older.

  4. QUESTION:
For Halloween, should I be Alice in Wonderland, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, or the Greek goddess Athena?
My mom says that this year, I'm too old for trick-or-treating; however, I'm still going to wear a costume to hand out candy. What I thought of was either Alice in Wonderland, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, or Athena or another figure of Greek mythology, like Pandora.

I thought that with the Alice costume, when the kids came to the door, I could be all, "Oh, my! A tiger, a fairy and a ghoul! Don't tell me I'm back in Wonderland!", or for Dorothy, “Don’t tell me I’m back in Oz!”, but I already have the rudimentary "costume" for Athena, a cream colored sheet I could turn into a toga-like thing.

However, being Alice would mean having to buy nearly a whole costume, the blonde wig (I'm brunette), the blue dress, the white pinafore, and the white stockings/tights. Dorothy would probably be more work, though, because I’d have to buy (or find) the blue checkered dress, the white blouse, a long brunette wig (I have pretty short hair), the ribbons, and the red ruby slippers. However, I do have a terrier that would be pretty good for Toto! Additionally, the savings I’d get by being Athena might be offset by fewer kids knowing who I am. I have such a big problem here. *sigh*

So, you do the problem-solving for me: Alice, Dorothy or Athena for Halloween?
Come on people! I'll give you 10 points if you give me stores that have good( and cheap!) costumes/costume pieces along with what you think I should be. I know you want the ten points, come and take them!

    • ANSWER:
I love Alice in Wonderland and don't care for Wizard of Oz at all so maybe I'm a bit biased..But Alice is such a classic! :D "Curiouser and Curiouser"

Um..I have to say though some kids wont recognize it anyway. They're all obsessed with the newer stuff.

  5. QUESTION:
Alice in Wonderland Dress for a Party?
I want a dress like Alice's from Tim Burton's alice in wonderland for my birthday party that i am having in a few months. I'm not having any luck finding one that looks like hers and is under about 100 dollars. Can someone help?

Tim Burtons Alice In Wonderland 2010

I was hoping to find one that was similar to this but shorter. Probably one that comes up to my knees or just above,so farley short.
I also dont want it to look like a costume. Its for a sweet sixteen so nothing little kid like.

    • ANSWER:
This one was actually styled after tim burtons movie and is only .97
